EU Novel Food
Consultation

It is the legal responsibility of the food business operator (the person or company placing the product on the market) to determine the novel status of the food or food ingredient they intend to place on the market.

There are several key things to consider:

  • Has your product or ingredient been consumed in the EU prior to May 1997?

  • Has your product been consumed outside the EU?

  • Is the manufacturing process new or novel?

  • What is the composition of the final product?

Still not sure?

If you are still unsure, you can:

  1. Check with a consultant & if they cannot conclude,

  2. Submit a novel food consultation to an EU Member State (MS)

The novel food consultation procedure consists of:

  • Building a technical dossier

  • Submitting to the EU MS where you first intend to market your product

  • It should take 4 months to get a conclusion, but it can take a lot longer!

An overview of the product & the outcome will be made publicly available on the EC website.
