Insect Protein

In the EU, proteins derived from insects fall under category V of the novel food regulation.

Since 2018, insects have fallen within scope of the novel food regulation. As such, all insects & products derived from them need to undergo a novel food authorisation.

As insects were being sold in the EU prior to the novel food regulation, there was a transition period for companies to submit a dossier to get their insects approved. The deadline was January 1st 2019.

To sell whole insects or insect protein you will need to obtain pre-market authorisation as a novel food.

We can help you to determine which studies you need to support the safety, identity & stability of your insect protein. We can also help you to design the studies to ensure regulatory compliance & guide you through the whole regulatory process.
